Boston Closes! State 50 Registered... Now We Wait!!!!

If you haven't already heard-- marathon history was made today when the 2011 Boston Marathon closed in just about 7 hours! That's about 20K open reg spaces... gone in 7 hours! Why the change? Well they bumped back registration a month (from September to October) allowing for more people to register that qualified in the speedy-early fall marathons--Chicago, Columbus, Portland... Omaha? Ok maybe that was just me lol!

Early this morning the registration page was very busy and people had a very hard time getting the form to process through. After attempt #4, I finally got this back...

"Dear Stephanie:

Your entry for the 115th Boston Marathon has been received, and your spot in the race has now been reserved, pending verification of your entry and qualifying information."

Yay! So now I just wait to see if everything goes through ok and I get me confirmation from the BAA! I'm unnecessarily worried that something is going to go wrong like... my credit card company has a down server and it they screw up my payment, orrr they misspell my name while looking up my Omaha results, orrr they have a weird issue with their registration and delete all people named "Stephanie"-- I know, like I said-- unnecessarily worried!

Let's hope and pray and send good mojo vibes to the BAA so my 50th state plan can unfold like we hope!!! Fingers and toes crossed :)

Detroit Marathon ~ Post Race Thoughts!

Today was the Detroit Marathon and my state #42 (marathon #45). This marathon was different because the course goes from Detroit, into Windsor (Ontario) Canada. After the Chicago Marathon of last week, this felt like a breath of fresh air with only about 4,000 full marathon runners... albeit with another 10,000+ half marathoners and 5K runners.

Overall, the race went pretty well. I had a time of 3:30:19.... yeah so when I said I was going to take it easy I was (once again) a BFL (big fat liar). I was actually after a low 3:20, but had some ummm... potty needs. I did NOT use the imodium that I tried last week and this is definitely becoming an issue. Anyways- My time scored me top 5% of women and in my A/G but with this many runners, I did not place.

PreRace!
Detroit doesn't seem to have a lot to do unless you want to go to Canada (couldn't b/c MB didn't have a passport and was lucky they gave her a bib) or like Casinos (not too big on them unless we're in vegas). So what did we do?... we went to hell-- oops I mean Ann Arbor. More on the Michi-loser trip in the last post, but in case you were wondering-- Michigan LOST! Muaahhahahahaah

Prior to the race we were able to meet up with another marathon maniac family-- Sally and Harold-- a father/daughter marathon maniac duo who are after the 50-states as well. We got a marathon maniac-family picture, then were off to gear check. It was cold this morning and I did NOT want to take off my sweats. Fortunately the start corrals were packed and body heat worked wonders and blocked the cold breeze.

The Race!
The course was pretty cool... nothing too crazy hilly, except crossing the bridge and going through a tunnel from Detroit to Canada and back. Spectators were great through the whole course! A lot of them came out with their won provisions-- beer, candy, fruit, etc.

PostRace!
Immediately upon finishing I got the wonderful opportunity to have my medal given to me by ANOTHER runner-blogger... Steph! She was super sweet and it was so nice to see a friendly face at the finish!!! Thanks for volunteering and being the one to give me my medal Steph!

Post-race I managed to scam myself-- not 1, not 2, but 3 free massages!!!! Not only that, but there was a group from Michigan Spine & Pain that gave out massages and I got one on Friday and one on Saturday. :) Hey! This is a very important part of training!

After eating, showering, and napping, we went to find ourselves some Chocolate :) We found a dessert lovers dream called Astoria. This is what we got... don't judge we split it b/t 2 of us!

Ok-- I've had my 4 hour drive back, eaten everything in sight upon getting home and used a heat bad on my back/butt. I'm a little sore on my hammies, but besides that I'm ok. Now it's time for bed!!!!

Happy Recovery!

Detroit Marathon in the AM!

Happy Marathon Eve... let's face it-- it should be a holiday in all families!!!

Michi-Losers
MB and I spent the day in (gag) Ann Arbor to watch the Michi-Losers get further dominated by Iowa! Woohoo... great game! Ann Arbor is about 40 minutes away and before making our trip we went BACK to the marathon expo (for the second day in a row) to pick up an amphipod for MB and ... not gonna lie... I got a second free massage. I will be getting my third tomorrow post-race!

Pre-Race Dinner and Course Construction!
When we got back we went to Greek Town to get dinner and found out that there are not a lot of runner-friendly (non greasy, non ethnic) foods around here-- right right, we should have known when we went to GREEK town! We also found out that part of the course is seriously under construction. If you're running Detroit tomorrow BEWARE of very uneven ground! There are chunks of the road broken up and no notice around them.

Race Shirts!
If you're following the Detroit Marathon page on facebook, you'll notice they ran out of most common sizes for shirts pretty early today-- eek! No good. Luckily, we went last night and I got my XS-- which is actually XS! Super stoked!

Ok back to the Ohio State game *GO BUCKS*-- oops I mean getting rest for the race!

Good luck to every body racing in the morning!

Detroit Marathon ~ Race RUNdown (#42-MI)

Inspiration Points...
1. 45 TOTAL Marathons Completed! It's only my 42nd state, but I'm 3 ahead in total marathons!
2. Oh CANADAAAA During this race we get to run to Canada and back! Some of my favorite things are from Canada, like... Canadian Bacon, Heinz Ketchup, Marlene, and the 2010 Winter Olympics!
3. Race 2 of 5 in a Row!... This is going to be my longest streak going! Let's see if we can hold on!

MI Race RUNdown...
Detroit Free Press Marathon ~ Sunday October 17, 2010. (#42) 7:00am Start for all races!
Detroit, MI ~ Downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario
Registration Fees: $75-$90 Early ($105-$125 late) Availability: Marathon and half only. Register here.
Year Running: 33rd!
Races Available: Full, Half and 5K
2010 Expected Field: 4830 Max (Full) 10,800 Max (Half) + 5-Person Relay
2009 Field:  3780
... Females: 1324  ... Age Group: 252 (F25-29)
2009 Avg. Finish Time: *4:18:57!!* Another fast one.
Certified Course/BQ Certified?: Yes/Yes
Cutoff Time and Early Start Option: No early start and a 6.5 hour limit with a strict "last chance pacer" you have to race! ... I'm sorry, but it could be HILARIOUS to watch people try and race this person at the end. Definitely sticking around for the last runner!!!
Weather Update: Highs in the 60's, lows in the 40's and SUNNY! Perfect running weather! Definitely going to be chilly at the start, but I have my cool Chicago arm warmers now!

Course:
MarathonGuide Rating:
This course has an international delight... taking you from Detroit over to Windsor, Ontario (thats Canada, folks) and back. The description sites that the course is relatively flat with exception to a bridge and tunnel area. There were some people on marathonguide saying it was hilly and challenging, but judging by the elevation chart... these people are from Kansas!
Race 411:
~ Finally a Marathon about RACING! The course time limits are serious and so is the race director, putting this little ditty on their website...
"We consider our events “competitive”, and not simply as fun runs or walks.  A “Last Chance Pacer” will be provided for both events."
What a novel concept... a race that is about racing!!!!
Holy Fast Course Batman! I've been finding some pretty fast races! And this is no small potatoes race with about 4,000 marathon runners.
Lemon-Lime Gator-gag me! Remember my lovely vomit tour d' Chicago? Oh right... it was just last weekend. I was hoping to go sans LL Gatorade for a while-- seeing that I puked bright green for about an hour and a half straight. Let's hope I can keep it down.
~ ONE Gu Zone? ... what's the point of even having the one?
~Passport? Ummm... yeah we need a passport now to get to Canada and apparently that means even if you're traveling on foot. They check it before hand and you only get your bib if you pass their pre-screening they do on you. ... uber creepy!

Race Plan:
I have a 50K next weekend, and 2 marathons the following weekends after that. I'm going to try and take this one a little easier (say a 3:45-3:50'ish time) to try and save my legs, but still get my sub-4:00. Normally I would say "you know you can't trust me when I say that"-- but I'm coming down with a little cold (damn people at work need to be quarantined!) and I really do think I'll run a little slower.

Throw Back! Bring it back now ya'll...
Reverse the Countdown!
This is my 42nd marathon-state, meaning I have 9 to go including this race. What was going on around state #9!?!? I was running the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon in WV. I thought this was a great small race and was the first time I did 2 marathon weekends in a row... 2009 me would think 2010 me was out of her MIND with 5 races in a row! Ok... and she would probably be right. I did go just over 4:00, so I'll be returning to WV for redemption on Nov 7th for my Marshall University Marathon

This time in 2009...
Last year I had just finished my FIRST Double Marathon- NH and ME! I had a great time at the double (esp NH with all the Cinci Galloway runners) and made some pretty good time. I learned that if I'm normally "hungry" in a marathon... by marathon #2 I'm FAMISHED and if there is no food on the course I will beg a child for his donuts and feel no shame! I was gearing up for Louisville, which I quickly deemed the WORST marathon of 2009. Since then it has been surpassed by the Wyoming Marathon (the worst marathon of 2010).

Meet up Info: I have plans to meet the following people at the following locations. If you're not on here and think you should me... shoot me an email (at the top nav bar) or leave a comment and we'll meet up...
MB~ Meet ya at the Hotel-Motel-HOLIDAY INNNNN
MM Fam Sally Boles and her dad Harold!~ Meet ya before the race for an MM Family pic!
Jodi ~ See ya at the race!
Steph!~ Meet you at the finish line with my medal! SAVE ME ONE-- I hear they run out :)

Happy Racing!

Recovering and Gearing Up... B2B Race Weeks!

First, thanks for all the notes and comments on yesterdays post! I was a little deflated after Chicago, but keeping it in perspective it was a decent time. If you've been following-- you know I put more pressure on myself than the average bear!

Another Marathon o' Marathons...
We're in the middle of a whirlwind and truly maniacal month of marathoning. 2 weeks ago I completed the Omaha Marathon, gave myself a week off and then ran Chicago as the first of FIVE marathons in a row. "Five?... I thought you had FOUR in a row?" You may be saying. Yes well-- what happens when Stephanie takes a weekend off from racing? ... yeah, she signs up for more races! I've added a repeat state to the calendar-- Marshall University Marathon in West Virginia. Why?...

- I need a sub-4 hour WV marathon and...
- I've already done Hatfield-McCoy (and these are the only WV marathons)
- You get to carry a football through the stadium for the last 100 yards-- too cool to pass up
- It's a driving race so there are no additional flight costs!

So this is what October/November looks like (Are you racing any? Let me know and I'll add you to the "Upcoming Marathons" Page)...
1) Chicago Marathon 10/10/10
2) Detroit Marathon (I get to run to Canada!) 10/17/10
3) Bimblers Bluff 50K (CT) 10/24/10
4) Spinx Run Fest (SC) 10/30/10
5) Marshall University Marathon 11/7/10 (Repeat State)
*a WEEK off!*
6) Philadelphia Marathon 11/21/10 (Repeat State)

Recovo-gear-up Time!
These back to back weeks of racing definitely make the old workout schedule a little different. I'm half recovering, half gearing up and half tapering for the Detroit Free Press Marathon. Is that 3 halves?... yeah, my blog so I can have 3 halves! How do we get a little of all of the above? This is how...

Recovery...
LOTS of stretching heating and icing. I ran a little hard in my first half of Chicago (7:20 pace) so my legs are definitely a little sore still
Massage? Very seriously thinking about a massage this week or next week to help get the lactic acid out
Elliptical- I went on the elliptical for a while last night and put it on a high ramp so I could get a stretch while working out the sore muscles.
Lower mileage- I dropped my speedwork session this week and I'm doing a tempo run in it's place a day later. Still get the run and speed in, but without further burning my quads out.

Gearing Up...
Tempo Run! I always like to get a pre-marathon tempo run before each race. It helps remind the legs that you mean business for the upcoming weekend
Strength Training- Early in the week! Yep, it sure hurts more post-Chicago, but if I do it any later I'll have a hard time with the upcoming race.
Focus and Planning- To ensure I get sub 4-hours for the majority of the next few races, I have to plan on running this one a little bit slower... say a 3:50'ish time?

Taper?
... what is this taper you speak of? Haha I do a sort of shortened version of a taper. Since the race is on Sunday I will not run on Saturday. Friday I'll try and do a morning run so I have more time to recover. The run will only be 4-5 miles and at an easier pace.

What's New at Steph's 50 Marathon Challenge?
Marathon Maniac Divas! If you're on facebook, you may notice a little activity going on around the MMs lately. Well in Chicago myself and 4 other MM women put ourselves into a team for Chicago and competed that way. The name of our team was the Marathon Maniac Divas and we've become a little hooked on the idea of getting PINK MM shirts... instead of the McDonalds looking Red and Yellow ones. If you're on facebook and a maniac, feel free to join the group "Marathon Maniac Divas" and let the Prez know what you think of a PINK MM shirt option! We're making a very strong lobbying effort...

Nike Free 7.0!
This weekend was my first race in the 7.0's (v. the 5.0's I've used for the past 18 races!). Thoughts? They still have the same light weight feel and flexibility of the 5.0's. I still have a more forefoot strike. In addition... they are just a little wider in the front, so when my feet swell in a race, I'm not losing all my toes in the process.

What I don't like? There is more of an arch built into the 7.0 and I'm not used to that. Currently my arch and the insert are in a battle and I assure you... my foot will win! It's quite stubborn!

Boston Registration Opens!!!
T-5 days until the BAA opens registration for Boston!!!!

Happy Running!

Chicago Marathon ~ Post-Race Thoughts #1

As you all know, this past weekend was the 2010 Chicago Marathon on 10.10.10! I'll do a full post-race and race ratings later... I just wanted to let everybody know I finished state #41 and it was a sub-4:00 so I won't have to repeat IL. Also-- I had a ton of fun with my Floridian friends who ventured up for the race- CB, Hill, and Coach Nathan. That is about where the good news ends... and the Stress-o-meter begins!

1) My race started out very hectic as we had to RUN to 1) Find the assigned corrals and 2) Make it to the corrals as everything involved in the Chicago marathon is unnecessarily spaced out from the expo to the start and onto the finish.

2) I started with the 3:20 pace group and hoped to hold on for a while and maybe fall back if I wasn't feeling it. Well apparently this meant starting at a 7:20 min/mile pace. FYI- if you're doing a 3:20, this is a 7:37 min/mile split. Not only that but we were wall to wall with people through the whole race. Being so packed in meant you couldn't cut tangents, you were elbowed and shoved in every direction and it was impossible to navigate an aid station.

3) So I made a little error in judgement and chose to take an imodium before the race. I had heard from fellow runners that this could eliminate the need for a bathroom break... great! That 2 minutes could be the difference b/t making a guaranteed NYC time and not, just like at Omaha. Well if you don't know (as I didn't) imodium works by severely dehydrating you! I approached water stops like I had been crawling through the Sahara Desert for 3 weeks... GULPING down water and lemon-lime gatorade like it was my job. Oh gross! I got so full, but couldn't come even close to quenching a thirst...
 4) ... This is when the vomiting began! I was so full and couldn't actually take in any liquids. My body began to reject them and I vomited from mile 16 to 26... I'm pretty sure I should get some kind of award for that!

5) And then it got hot and Stephanie got very dehydrated! I got a little of every kind of bad running visitor from Chills and goosebumps, to chest pains, to serious kidney pain. I continued to vomit anything I ate or drank and my insides started feeling like they were on fire. So many lessons learned in this race people!

I've never been SO happy to see a finish line approaching... that is until we made a turn and had to go uphill on the last .2.... seriously? I've never been so uncomfortable running in my life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok now that all the complaints are out I feel better! Onward and upward! Definitely a tough race and a struggle for most runners from what I can tell. It was fun being part of SUCH a huge race, but I think I'll stick to the middle-sized (1000-15000 ppl) races.

Steph's Finish: 3:43:41!
Not a horrible time considering the above, but I have to admit I was more than a little disappointed. I have a ton of races in a row coming up and it's going to get harder and harder to get a PR until I get a week or 2 of a break... you know, in December.

I'm still not feeling 100% but my body better get in line soon cause we have a race in 5 days!!!

Will you be running to Canada??? Cause I will! Detroit this weekend for my (ICKKKKK) neighbor to the north-state marathon. I WILL be wearing my Ohio State gear....!!!!!!!

Happy (and healthy) Racing!

Omaha Marathon ~ Race Ratings (NE~40)

Tag line: "Don't forget your wings... you'll fly through this course!!!"

Ratings...
Omaha Marathon ~ September 26, 2010
Omaha, NE ~ Downtown/Lewis and Clark Landing
Type: 100% Pavement
Year Running: 35th!
Registration Fee: $70-$80 Early ($90-$100 late)
Charity Race? Yes... Many, linked here
Runners:  608, 208 Females... where all the girls at??
Available Races: Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K
Average Finish Time: 4:22:29 (Note: in prior years the avg time was lower... this was a 50-stater reunion year, so that might be altering the avg time)
BQ %: 14.97

Overall Race Ratings: 4.4/5.0

Average Calculated Rating: 4.3/5.0
~  This is a great race that is easy to get to and has an amazingly fast course! The organization is great with more than enough water stops, a free pasta dinner, and great support along the course.

Race Director: Let's play race director...
~ This race organization can use just a little help. First the halfies and 10K runners need to wear bibs on their backs indicating what race they're in so we're not racing people running much shorter. If possible add 1 or 2 more GU stops along the course-- or at least have it available for purchase at the expo (possibly even in multiple flavors). Post-race food could use a little help but they have the basics you need and the medals (albeit unique) can use a lot of help!

Event Organization: 4.5/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: ~ 10miles
Rental Car Required: No... Shuttles are available
~ The website is pretty functional (albeit, you need to click through to find what you're looking for). But no worries... they send you a pre-race packet full of information on the race and Omaha weeks before the race. Travel to this race is a breeze. There is a major airport available and it's less than 10 miles from the start/finish/expo/host hotel. Getting to the race, there is a little traffic congestion with all 3 races going at once, but it moved really quickly. There is lots of parking available.

There is also a FREE pasta dinner to all runners, at which Jeff Galloway was the guest speaker. The pasta was, well... pretty terrible, but hey! it was free and it was right at the packet pickup, so I can't complain.

Also, their tracking system displays some pretty swanky results. They use MTec Results, which gives not only your time, but your place at the various points that they have check mats down. I thought that was really cool and different. Here is an example... My Results. It tells you how many runners you passed and that passed you as well.

Race Organization: 3.8/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: Gatorade/Yellow
~ There were aid stations at LEAST every 2 miles... sometimes more. This was really good b/c race morning I realized that I forgot my water bottle I carry. Woopsie.
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  GU/Various ~ Only available at mile 18!!!! BYOG! Bring your own GU.
~Post Race Food: .The post race food was pretty basic... bagels, juices, etc. They DID add some chocolate milk as well as soup... which was good for the colder morning we were experiencing.

~ It would have been nice to have more GU stations. I saw on the map that they only listed the 1 point at mile 18, but I thought "that can't be right... there has to be more." Besides that I was pretty happy. Port-a-johns were available when/wherever you needed them. Also, there were a couple points on the course with bands or a guy with an amp and a guitar.

Let's talk multiple races! The marathon, half, and 10K all go off at once... this actually turned out to be much less congested than I thought, and it was nice to have their fast paces to push us. However, once again, the other races were not made to wear "Half" or "10K" on their backs, which is nice for racing purposes. I had no idea how I was placing until the marathoners were alone and there was a volunteer who let me know... by then it was too late to make any significant moves.

I was pretty happy with the mile markers... but the course was definitely LONG so as we went along the mile markers seemed to stretch a 0.01 longer each mile. There are NO clocks available anywhere on the course.

Course: 5.0/5.0
~MarathonGuide Rating...3.5

Garmin Distance: 26.32
Type: Pavement- City road
~ Elevation Gain/Loss
~ This course is FAST! Everybody I know (as long as they were feeling well) got a PR! Even with the mass of 50-staters running this race, the avg time was still one of the fastest I've seen this year. The course is set up for a perfect race! It starts out flat with a lot of quick turns. Between being caught up with the 10K'ers and all the turns you'll have to keep pulling yourself back. When you're good and warmed up and we've ditched the 10K runners, you start on the hills. From mile 6 to about mile 13 we have a series of LARGE hills, however they run in peaks and valleys. So if you can push yourself up a pretty long steep hill, you can rest as you coast right back down it on the other side. And you will push yourself because the halfies are heading toward their finish and picking up the pace... you're sure to get caught up. The end of the race is flat to a low-grade downhill with more quick turns for great racing. I'm definitely glad they changed the course around because this is an awesomely fast course!

Scenery? If you're out for the sights you get a very quiet city type of a feel. The beginning is in the outskirts of downtown and the bulk wraps around huge ball fields, arenas, a zoo, etc.

Spectators: 3.8/5.0
~ I was surprised there were so many spectators out there. At least once a mile you got a good section of people until about the last 3-4 miles. From what I've read that's better than most others.

 Pace Group: 5.0/5.0
~ There were pace groups from 3:00 to 4:30 every 15 minutes. I had the opportunity to start with the 3:30's but I went ahead and ran a very consistent race so I wasn't able to see too many others. On the small turnarounds I was able to see a few pacers and they seemed pretty well on pace. The 3:30 pace leaders had a lot of information to share at the start which I found really helpful... he let us know that after mile 13 you're done with the big hills... that gave me a lot of confidence in my race.

Runner/Corrals: 4.8/5.0
MB, Me and Dave Mari (Maniacs!!!)
~ There were no corrals and even with the large number of runners at the start (Full, half, and 10K runners) it never felt overly congested. The runners were VERY nice... esp all the maniacs I found. It was also a 50-state marathoner reunion so there were tons of maniac and 50-staters. I also found it nice to have the halfies run so much of the race with us as it really helped to push the pace!

Expo: 3.8/5.0
My Omaha Shirt!
~ There was a small expo with just a few tables. I did find it nice that there was so much Omaha Marathon gear available for sale and their stuff was awesome. I even bought the yellow shirt in the picture. They had a few running groups tables (like the 50-staters) as well as a place to pick up discount shoes/clothes/etc. I was a little disappointed that they only had 1 pack of GU left and only in chocolate :(

Swag: 3.6/5.0
~T-Shirts: The T-shirts were very nice long sleeve green tech T's with the Omaha logo on the front and Omaha Marathon on the back. They are super comfortable-- light but still soft. My only issue? The smalls run very large and even though I ordered an XS, they ran out and didn't set them aside for the people that ordered them :( 4.2

Official Shirt Front
Official Shirt Back

~Medals: The medal was very similar to Erie's-- round and made of glass, however they shot various colors into the mold, making each medal unique (cool) but also very hard to read (uncool). The good part was that if you didn't like the medals give to you (by marines by the way) then you could go back and pick out a color you like. 2.8

~ Goodie Bag: The bag came with a packet full of area information and discounts. It also came with samples of Omaha made popcorn as well as some joint juice type stuff. +0.1

Results: Stephanie
Chip Time: 3:24:01
Place: Overall- 68/608, Gender- 6/208, A/G (F25-29)- 1/35
