Maui Oceanfront Marathon ~ Race Ratings (#48)

Tag line:
"A great vacation with a 26.2 mile interruption"
Ratings...
Maui Oceanfront Marathon ~ January 23, 2011
Maui, HI ~ Wailea to Old Lahaina Town.
Type: 100% Road
Year Running: 3rd
Registration Fee: $90-$120
Charity Race? Yes! All of the charities contribute by volunteering on the course aid stations.
Runners:  281... Females: 120
Available Races: Marathon, Half-Marathon, 15k, 5k
Average Finish Time: 4:39:08
BQ %: 12.1%

Overall Race Ratings: 4.0/5.0

Average Calculated Rating: 4.0/5.0
~ This marathon provides pretty much everything you expect for a tropical marathon-- beaches, whale watching, warm weather, palm trees and volcanoes. It's also more challenging than you expect as most of it runs uphill. Go for the fun, the beauty and the people, not the speed!

Race Director: Let's play race director...
~ The first change I would make is providing the option for transportation to the start as that is where a lot of the nicer resorts are. Provide the option to pay $10 more for a shuttle from the finish and it would be cheaper than paying the buses/taxis to get back to the start. The shirt is a little on the weak side from what I expected, but it is from a local artist which is a nice touch... it could still use some work.

Event Organization: 3.6/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: ~20 miles from OGG (less expensive) and down the street from the more expensive airport
Rental Car Required: Yes
~ This is a small race with a definite relaxed feel to just about every aspect except the finish. The website gives you the basic need to know information and emails are shot out a few days before the race. They do a good job of recommending host hotels and they give a really good discount at some of the nicer resorts (I'm talking like $250/night instead of $350-$400). You're in Maui so nothing is a cheap as other states and as a tourist you're expect to be nickle and dimed to death everywhere.

Getting to the start was easy as most of us stayed in Wailea. Getting back however was a challenge. They don't set up return shuttles so you need to carry money on you to take 2 public buses to get back. Oh and expect to carry money on you for the buses and post-race food because there are no bag drops at the start! What helps is that most runners bring family/friends (hey, its a trip to Hawaii!) and they bring them back as well as bring them extra clothes, food, money, etc. Tip: If you don't mind getting up very early drive to the finish and they have shuttles to the start very early in the morning! That way you have all your stuff at the end of the race!

Race Organization: 4.6/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: N/A
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  Cliff Shot Blocks/Mountain Berry/Almost every rest stop from 10 going forward.
~Post Race Food: .The post race food included a lot of fruit (yum) some bagels and chips. Nothing too crazy.
The start of the race includes a hawaiin ceremony with a traditional prayer ceremony. The people in their ceremonial garb led us to the start line to send us off. The first thing I noticed is that the mile markers run backwards!!! When  you get to 1.2 miles, the "25" mile marker is there because you have exactly 25 left to run. I believe this was so the countdown numbers could be used for both the full and half marathon. They were a little low on rest stops and there weren't many hiding places if you needed to go suddenly. There were, however, plenty of aid stations and they were full stocked with drinks, cliff shot blocks, and various other snacks. The aid stations also had various themes which sometimes included extras like a sprinkler area for when it got hot.

Course: 3.2/5.0
MarathonGuide Rating
Garmin Distance: 26.25
Type: 100% Road
~ Elevation Gain/Loss:
~ This is a point to point course that starts in Wailea to ends in Old Lahaina. It runs (mostly) along the ocean on one of their main roads. While it's still dark you run mostly through towns that are near the ocean then you're brought into this boggy swamp type area-- warning! Keep your mouth and eyes closed here or you will ingest many a bugs! PROTEIN YUM!!! After that you're brought out onto cliff areas where you have a pretty good climb as well as a pretty great views of whales breaching! Finally you come to Old Lahaina that's a cute touristy town. The finish runs you directly into the beach and Ocean for a true COOLdown in the water!

The Good? The sites are absolutely beautiful. Bring your camera for the oceans, volcanoes whales, and cute towns. Point to point gives you a pretty good mix of everything. I loved finishing right on the Ocean. If you're looking for a mildly challenging course this is it. But the good part is you're running away from the rising sun so that keeps you from dying in the 70+ degree weather toward the end!

The bad? Some people (ahem- MB!) had issues with "red sand"-- please note, I didn't noticed red sand, but along the cliffs on a downhill they were prone to slipping and SOME people ever sprained their ankle around mile 17. The beginning  (~7 miles) of the race isn't that great because 1) It's in the dark and there are very few street lights. You're running on the sidewalks and the ends are hard to see. 2) The towns are pretty boring and long straights with little turns. The bugs in the boggy area also weren't fantastic, but it didn't last too long.

Spectators: 4.0/5.0
~ This is not a huge spectator marathon unless you count the whales! Only part of the road is shut down for us and a lot of it runs along cliffs. However, with each aid station there were always a few spectators with signs, drums, music, etc. They were often leapfrogging their runners and yelling as they drove by. They were also having some sort of contest for rest stops. A lot of them were themed, which included a "break through the wall" one where you ran through sprinklers lined with fake cement walls. Very cool!

 Pace Group: NA/5.0
~ No pace groups here although they PROBABLY could have had a couple

Runner/Corrals: 5.0/5.0
~ No corrals needed here. Runners are very friendly-- but I think that has something to do with the fact that it's HAWAII!!!! This is one of the smaller Hawaii races and a lot of 50-staters and maniacs make up the crowd of runners. One of the best parts? The announcer says all of our names as we come in and makes a big deal out of each and every person running that is a 50 stater! I also had a chance to meet and run (a little) with Regina Joyce-- marathon Olympian. Too cool.

Expo: NA/5.0
~ No Expo-- in fact, you pick up your bib and chip at one of the director's condos.

Swag: 4.0/5.0
~T-Shirts: The shirt is a sweat wick, light weight, nice shirt. However, the picture or "art" as they are calling it has a scantily clad woman on the front looking over the ocean. I feel like if I wear this, people might get the wrong impression of me? Note: This is from a local artist, so incorporating local artwork is definitely a plus in their direction... I would just advise they create a more gender neutral shirt? 3.4

The artwork blown up on the front of the shirt is pictured right -->
~Medals: I am a BIG fan of these medals. For a smaller race they really did a great job. It pulls in the features and the colors of Maui on this colorful ring with runners, the bridges, palm trees and the race name. Even the ribbon had a great teal coloring on it. Definitely one of my favorites! 4.6

~ Goodie Bag: No goodie bags here!

Overall Race Ratings: 4.7/5.0

Average Calculated Rating: 4.6/5.0
~ What a great race with an excellent group of people from the directors to the runners, right down to the spectators and lap counters. If you can get into this marathon... TRY! Minnesota is cold in winter but beautiful. The organization is exceptional (especially in emergency situations) and you really feel like family by the end. Thanks Coach Dick for an awesome race!

Race Director: Let's play race director...
~ Not much you can do about the bathroom situation but that was really the problem I could see. The medal could be worked on but for a lower cost marathon it really wasn't bad!

Coach Dick- Zoom yah yah race director!
Event Organization: 4.9/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: ~45 Minutes
Rental Car Required: Yes!
~ Minneapolis is the closest airport and is a pretty good size so (depending on where you're coming from) prices shouldn't be too bad to fly to this race. There are only 40 runners allowed at this race so most information is actually sent directly to us via email and not centrally located on the website including all the "FAQ's" and prior year results. The director does a great job of staying in touch with us in the weeks and days leading up to the race. The town of Northfield is SO cute. The main road reminds me of a quaint old western town. We stayed at the Archer house which was very decently priced and had a charm to it that you can't get at a super 8!

The school itself (St. Olaf College) is amazing. In the dead of winter with stone buildings it reminded me of some sort of ice castle. It was absolutely stunning. Speaking of the school... remember dorm food in college? Bump that up to 5-star level cooking in a buffet style and that was our pre-race dinner. It was amazing... and amazingly hard not to gorge myself with "bad for me" pre-race food. Also... GREAT medical attention!!!!

The bad part of the organization? They can only allow 40 runners so before you go planning on this race, remember that it's lottery based!!! And the number of applicants is growing every year!

Race Organization: 4.5/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: None
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  None
~Post Race Food: .There was a lunch planned with some of the local running clubs, but with the emergency interruption of the race, most people just went home post-race. There were PB&J sandwich stuff to use as well as some cookies if you stayed around a little at the field house.

The race itself is incredibly organized. They don't provide drinks or gels, but they do provide 4 tables at each corner of the track for the runners to store anything they could ever want! They also provide each runner with their own student! No!, not to take home but to count our laps for us. Not only did they count for us, but they also provided an incredible support system cheering for us every lap. The other great aspect of this race was that the director provided us a paper to put our names on and pin to our backs. This was great as we got to know each other, by name, as we rounded each lap.

The one issue I had was that the bathrooms were a pretty good distance away, so if you were worried about time you were going to be SOL here (no pun intended).

Course: 3.8/5.0
MarathonGuide Rating (NA- New Course)
Garmin Distance: NA
Type: 100% Suspended cement/carpet track
~ Elevation Gain/Loss: 0 gain/loss
~ Well, the course is pretty flat! haha... but seriously, it's actually a pretty good track for this type of event. It's large for an indoor track and it's more of a square than anything, so you're not leaning or making turns the whole time. If you're looking for some sort of PR here I'm not sure this is the place. Yes, it's flat, but if you're a faster runner you're going to have to pass on the outside, which could add a lot of distance onto your race! The marathon is measured based on the shortest route (the inner lane) but most of the time you'll spend running on the middle or farthest lane. The cement was not forgiving, but hey! It's an indoor track... what do you expect? If you're going to push yourself here... I would say concentrate on your "Indoor Marathon PR."

Spectators: 5.0/5.0
~ Our lap counters (the St. Olaf XC team) were amazing spectators.... holding signs individualized with each runners name, and even chanting finishers names as we rounded to the finish! Some people brought spectators and over the pasta dinner and the marathon we all got to know each other very well. The spectators cheered on every single runner by name as we came around. The names on our backs proved helpful for everyone-- runners, and spectators alike!

 Pace Group: NA/5.0
~ Now that's just silly....

Runner/Corrals: 5.0/5.0
~ Runners in this race are amazing! I've never felt camaraderie in any marathon like this. We all get to know each other pretty well at packet pick-up and the dinner. But after 150 laps of passing each other we get pretty close! Everybody is super supportive of each other... the way these races should be!

Expo: NA/5.0
~ This is far too small to have an expo, BUT side note: there is a table with Zoom Yah! Yah! Marathon gear for purchase at the packet pick up that are pretty nice!

Swag: 4.0/5.0
~T-Shirts: The T-shirts are here (about 4 weeks post-race) and they're def a keeper! Each year they post a list of the results on the back of the shirt including every runners name, place, time etc. The shirt is a long sleeved cotton, high neck shirt for those cold winters. It's also very comfortable! 4.8

~Medals: The medal is a pretty basic circle of metal with the zoom yah yah "finisher" on the front. 3.2

~ Goodie Bag: No goodie bags at this race

Runners:  5062... Females: 2188
Available Races: Marathon, Half-Marathon, 2 Person Relay, Kids Run
Average Finish Time: 4:29:53
BQ %: 13.9%

Overall Race Ratings: 4.1/5.0

Average Calculated Rating: 4.2/5.0
~ A typical Rock'n'Roll race with lots of people, bands, etc with nice medals. It could use a little help to be more "Arizona" from the local running community. If you're looking more for a flat, fast course, this is it!

Race Director: Let's play race director...
The race was pretty well put together, but these large rock'n'roll marathons tend to lack a certain feel other marathons have. All of the rock'n'rolls tend to blend together and are pretty lifeless. I think a lot of this is driven by the organizers lack of involvement in the area since they're not technically from there.

They could use a little help from local running groups/stores/etc getting the community more involved. This could also be helpful for getting spectator involvement. They also need a little help with gels/shot blocks. 1 stop is not enough at all.

Event Organization: 4.0/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: Start (~6 miles from the airport) finish (~15 miles from the airport)
Rental Car Required: Yes.
~ Leading up to the event (as with all RnR events) there was plenty of communication, news letters, emails etc with directions. No matter where you stayed, you were close to either the start or finish, which was nice. Nothing was ever too far away. The difficult part with RnR marathons is usually the shuttle/parking situations. For Arizona, they have everybody park at the finish and shuttle to the start. We got to the start in the estimated 40 minutes and had no issues parking.

Post race... I was a little peeved that there were no massage tables. The only ones available were in this "PF Changs section" that you needed to pre-sign up for. Even though it cost you nothing, they wouldn't allow people to walk up and come in. The one new thing I saw was this area with buckets to people to ice their legs/feet. It was a pretty funny sight...
The really unusual aspect of this race was how the marathon and half were handled. Usually running with halfies can get annoying at the end as they clog up the last few miles. In this race however, they had separate start and finish areas completely that ended on each side of the post-race party. I really liked that that they were treated as 2 different races.

Race Organization:3.9/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: Lemon-lime/Cytomax & water available nearly every mile.
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  GU/Various/1 stop
~Post Race Food: .They had the typical bagels, cytomax, etc. But they also had frozen yogurt, potato chips, and dried fruit packs.
There were plenty of aid stations and "rest stops" available on the course. It definitely would have been nice to have more than ONE GU stop... and by miles 18/19, is there really a point anymore? It also would have been great to have a little more substantial food at the end.

I was pretty surprised at the bands on the course. RnR's advertise bands at every mile, but this was the first time I noticed how many... and they were pretty good! There were also cheering squads along the course, however... they seemed a little -- off. Their outfits weren't exactly cheer outfits, but more ripped stockings, leather jackets, etc. The course was very well marked at each mile with clocks.

Course: 4.5/5.0
MarathonGuide Rating (NA- New Course)
Garmin Distance: 26.2
Type: 100% Road
~ Elevation Gain/Loss: 150 ft gain/ 90 ft loss
~ This flat point to point course traveled from Phoenix to Tempe and included a steady graded climb up to about 18 then a mild drop at the end. It included a lot of long straight aways, but the road would veer directions here and there so you weren't seeing miles in front of you. The direction faced west, so when the sun came up it was on our backs. This was nice, especially when it started to get really hot. The sites were essentially city and mild desert. It was cool to finish at the ASU Sun Devil Stadium. If you're looking for a flat fast, warm, course this is the one for you!

Spectators: 3.7/5.0
~ There is a good amount of spectators at this race, but nothing crazy. Some of them did bring out food, water, alchi, etc., which was nice.

 Pace Group: 4.9/5.0
~ The only pace group I saw was the 3:20 group. I wasn't too far behind them and their leader ran a very consistent race. They also had quite a large group around them even toward the end.

Runner/Corrals: 4.8/5.0
~ There were corrals per usual at the rock'n'rolls. Fortunately I was able to be in the "preferred start" area right behind the elites because I was running in the corporate track and field championships. From my view the corrals worked great. The runners were very friendly along the way and at the end people were more excited than I've seen in a long time.

Expo: 4.4/5.0
The RnR races always put on a HUGE expo. All the usual characters were there: Bondi band, 1 more mile, power balance bands, etc. But they've been having a little circus-type area put on by Brooks which had running fortune telling machines, a 3 ring leader giving out running prizes, etc. One big issue I had with this marathon was the lack of parking/expensive parking in the garages in Phoenix.

Swag: 3.9/5.0
~T-Shirts: The shirt is a loose, blue, brooks Tech-T with a cute Arizona design on the front with sunny colors. 3.7

~Medals: Similar to the RnR Seattle marathon, the medal pays homage to the host city with a cactus as well as the guitar to represent rock'n'roll. Also similar to the Seattle medal there are sparkles!!! I DO love my sparkles. 4.1
~ Goodie Bag: The goodie bag was pretty typical for RnR marathons-- lots of pamphlets, a few cliff shot block samples, as well as some body gel samples.

Overall Race Ratings: 4.0/5.0

Average Calculated Rating: 3.9/5.0
~ This is a great middle-sized race with fantastic support along the way. It has a very difficult start area with traffic issues, but other than that the organization is pretty good. If you're looking for rowdy spectators to pump you up, this is a great race for you!

Race Director: Let's play race director...
~ The race needs to be downsized or the start moved. The start in fair park caused traffic issues, start/corral issues, and overall agitated runners from the beginning. I would either down-size the half marathon or bus the runners out to another location for the start... finishing in Fair Park is great for warmth in the stadium and a great backdrop for a finish. The second issue is the food at the end. They did a great job during the race, but granola, oranges, and beer is not exactly post-race food. Also-- the T-shirts. The shirts should be put aside for those that pre-ordered.

Event Organization: 3.8/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: 15 miles
Rental Car Required: Yes!
Cowboys Stadium... watching the game on the jumbo tron
~ The biggest issue this year was the location change. As much as they warned the runners, it was impossible not to get caught in traffic trying to get INTO Fair Park. We were only a mile away from the start line and it took over an hour to make it there. The start/finish has been altered from the prior course, but I had to admit it was nice to end and go straight into the Cotton Bowl and OUT of the cold! The organizers sent out a lot of information leading up to the race, including email updates. They scattered bands throughout the course for a little extra entertainment. I was impressed that they came out even in the cold weather! Upon completion of the race marathoners and half marathoners are corralled into 2 different areas to get our post-race food and finisher T-shirts. I thought this was a great solution to 5:00+ hour marathoners missing out.

Dallas IS a great area for a marathon. There is a ton to do from shopping and dining to visiting the Cowboys Stadium and Fair Park (including the holiday festival). Definitely schedule a day for sightseeing and travel.

Race Organization: 4.8/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: Lemon-Lime/Gatorade Endurance Formula
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  No Gel-- Cliff Shot Block packs provided at mile 20.
~Post Race Food: .The post race food was fairly non existent- just granola bars and oranges :( They did, however, give us 2 free beers! Aid stations were often and filled with gatorade and oranges. Toward the teen-miles they had many stops with extras like fresh fruit, cookies, candy, donuts, etc. There are port-a-johns available every mile (maybe more). The course is pretty well marked every mile for the marathon (almost exactly to the mile) however, the half-marathon was not exactly well marked... the 13 mile mark somehow came before the 26 mile mark yet ended at the same point. Weird, huh?

Course: 4.5/5.0
MarathonGuide Rating (NA- New Course)
Garmin Distance: 26.20
Type: 100% Pavement/Sidewalks
~ Elevation Gain/Loss: NA
~ The course now starts in Fair Park. This is good and bad. Good because it allows for the runners to experience Fair Park as well as end in the stadium to stay warm. This is bad because it's nearly impossible to get THAT many runners to Fair Park at once. The course is very flat and even their dreaded "hills" are nothing but short elevation changes. The scenery is great with gorgeous houses along the route. The White Rock Lake is also extremely pretty itself and is also lined with very nice houses. The whole area is decorated for Christmas including the mansions that are professionally decorated.

Spectators: 4.8/5.0
~ Now I should note this is a positive statement... I've never seen SO many drunk people that early in the morning! There were spectators lining nearly the entire course and I'm pretty sure they were all hammered by 10am. On top of that they had DOZENS of beer/drink stops. They cheered for us. They gave out food and water. They played music. They must have been having some sort of neighborhood competition because there were a few areas with fun themes and people dressed up cheering like crazy. That or Dallas has a bunch of very spirited residents. Overall I really like the spectators here!

 Pace Group: 2.0/5.0
~ The pace groups were all over the place. Some of the slower groups were in front of the faster teams at the start. The 3:30 pace group was a whole corral behind where the 3:30 runners were lined up. I started with this group and they took off at around a 9 min/mile pace for at least the first mile. They must have had a lot of time to make up over the race. I heard other people mention the pace teams being pretty far off pace as well. They DID have a strong availability of teams and each pace group seemed to have a LOT of people with them from start to finish.

Runner/Corrals: 3.8/5.0
~ They had a corral system set up for this race. I thought it worked out very well, letting each group go with about a minute in between. They did NOT do a very good job securing the corrals (anybody could jump in any of the corrals if they wanted) so there were still some slower runners up toward the front. The runners were all very friendly along the way. I probably talked to more people in this race than I usually do.

Expo: 3.7/5.0
~ The expo was pretty big with all the basics available. The space was not big enough and was very cramped. I think a lot of the unusual spots were over at the Las Vegas Marathon expo. The good part? The expo was held at the same time as the holiday festival at Fair Park. It wasn't anything crazy, but I guess it's a "must do" in winter time.

Swag: 4.1/5.0
~T-Shirts: The shirt is still a little debatable. It's a nice white long sleeved shirt with a cute logo on it. Pretty basic. The problem? They sold out of our pre-ordered sizes very quickly leaving us with XL options or to put an order on one. I put in for my XS and I've still yet to see it. :( The PLUS side is that they DID give all finishers their own finisher shirt that is a VERY nice, thin, technical shirt that is super comfy, cute, and of course has "finisher" on the front. As we finished they corralled us by race into the stadium so only marathoners got marathon finisher shirts and halfies got halfie finisher shirt. I liked that. They also provided male and female cut options for the finisher shirts. 4.4

~Medals: The medals again were very basic with the classic "Athenian marathon naked runner" design. 3.6

~ Goodie Bag: The goodie bag had some Gatorade endurance samples. I really like the pre-race drink they gave out. +0.1

~ People come for the flat, fast course, but you get hooked in by the small event, relaxed feel! The final stretch is run with a football in hand in the football stadium! As the comments come in, the organization makes pretty big improvements! It's nice to see another director taking the comments seriously. I was very impressed all around!

Race Director: Let's play race director...
~ The first thing I would do is add a spot for Gel/Gu on the course. Since you wrap through the park a few times they could easily make 1 GU spot that we could hit twice. The awards could use a little help, but that's not a huge deal. Also... it would be nice to find a way to get the kids on campus involved! Put some type of incentive... they would make for great spectators!

Event Organization: 3.7/5.0 (now broken into 2 parts, see below as well) As far as "event organization" we'll include things like Host hotel, website use, ease of travel to the event and to the actual race, etc.
Distance from Airport to Expo/Race: NA (I drove)
Rental Car Required: Yes!
~ I drove, but I know there aren't too many close airports! Hotels are very much "West Virginia" so prepare yourselves for that! Getting around, however, is very easy. This isn't a huge town and everything is pretty easy to find and get to. Parking was SO easy (we literally parked AT the starting line) we thought we had done something wrong or parked illegally. The website is simple but effective-- giving you any/all information you need. I couldn't breathe/smell/taste so I'm not sure how the pasta dinner was... MB said it was terrible. It didn't look great, but I scarfed it down. They gave out A/G awards... but EVERY award was the same (see the bowl below). There were 2 different colors.. I believe for the half and full races.

The MC at the event was a lot of fun. They call out the name and hometown of EVERY runner crossing and kept music blasting full force. They had massages available post-race which was great!

A/G Award and LD Snack!
Race Organization: 4.5/5.0
Hydration Color/Type: Red?/Gatorade (Why can't I remember???)
Gel Type/Flavors/Availability:  None
~Post Race Food: .They had a full grill set up for hamburgers and hotdogs. They also had a table FULL of little Debbie snacks... oh and there was some healthy stuff like fruit (but who caressss).
~ Water stops each and every mile +. There were also rest stops all along the way. They had mile markers at each mile and they were pretty dead on! No clocks. This happened on the course, so I'll include it here-- they did have a nice memorial moment by giving us flowers (optional) at mile 25 to carry with us about 200m to a fountain to place next to. I thought that was really nice! They also gave us footballs to carry the last stretch of the course in the football stadium, which was a very nice touch!

No gel/gu at all... as the only marathon left in WV (and a pretty fast one at that) I'm thinking this race is going to grow pretty quickly and they're going to need to get some gels!

Course: 4.0/5.0
MarathonGuide Rating
Garmin Distance: 26.26
Type: 100% Pavement/Sidewalks
~ Elevation Gain/Loss: NA
~ This twisty-looped course was pretty basic until the end. The last .1 or so is run IN the Marshall University stadium, where they hand you a football, you run to one endzone and back to the other. That makes for a unique experience. There is a point where you go by a river or lake of some sort with the coolest fog coming off of it-- very eerie! The scenery was ok. The elevation is VERY flat... almost NO hills, except for dips to go under train tracks/tunnels. Let's not forget... this course is extremely fast with one of the highest BQ %'s I've ever seen!

Spectators: 3.7/5.0
~ Any race around a college campus on a Sunday morning is going to be QUIET! This race had a very quiet feel to it but it was a relaxing quiet--peaceful-- that or I had WAY too much cough syrup before the race. There were lots of spectators in the park, which we wind through twice, but aside from that they are scattered throughout.

 Pace Group: NA/5.0
~ NA

Runner/Corrals: 4.5/5.0
~ No Corrals, but runners were really fun and friendly. I found the runners to be exceptionally talkative! There WAS one girl that I liked toying with for a while that was blatantly trying to race me and would slow down as soon as she went past... that was fun! Lots of maniacs because this is one of the very few (and possibly only now that Hatfield-McCoy is cancelled) marathons in WV.
Steph with Marathon Maniacs- GO LIPSTICK LADY!
Expo: NA/5.0
~ No real expo (only a few small vendors)

Swag: 4.1/5.0
~T-Shirts: Since I signed up a little later, I got a tech-t. They DO have the option (if you sign up early enough) to get a really nice Marathon Fleece. JEALOUS!!!! But the shirts were pretty nice. Long sleeve and technical. They have the HUGE marathon logo on the front. eek... 3.4

~Medals: The medals had a huge improvement from prior years. Although they totally copied off the flying pig "animal butt on back" I still love it! 4.8

~ Goodie Bag: None
